5 Breast Cancer Charities for Donation Efforts
Breast cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer; it is said to be one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths among women. This type of cancer is often detected in the later stages, wherein complete recovery is not expected. Moreover, the gene mutations that cause breast cancer can be passed on from one generation to the next. There are several charities in the country that focus on the research, prevention, and treatment of breast cancer. We enlist some of them:
1. Breast Cancer Research Foundation
The Breast Cancer Research Foundation is a not-for-profit organization with an aim to study preventive measures for breast cancer. It was established in 1993 and has since raised over half a billion dollars. This organization directly puts a major chunk of donations towards research and awareness efforts.
2. The Pink Fund
Treatment for breast cancer can be quite expensive. Even if one recovers significantly, the bills of therapies, medication, and tests can add up over the years. The Pink Fund is a charitable organization that offers financial assistance to people that are receiving active treatment for breast cancer. On an average, the Pink Fund can cover up to 90 days of nonmedical living expenses for a patient, such as home, utility, and vehicle payments.
3. Living Beyond Breast Cancer
Living Beyond Breast Cancer primarily works towards spreading awareness about breast cancer. It was established in 1991 by Marisa C. Weiss, a radiation oncologist. It also brings together people to form support groups and communities, providing them with the resources to cope with the disease. Its Young Women’s Initiative works with and educates women under the age of 45 about breast cancer through extensive research and programs.
4. METAvivor
METAvivor is one of the highest rating nonprofits in the country. This organization strives to improve the lives of women who are suffering from metastatic (stage 4) breast cancer. In this stage, the cancerous cells travel from the origin and start growing in other parts of the body, such as the liver, bones, etc. It is a volunteer-driven organization that funds peer-reviewed research and works towards increasing public awareness about breast cancer.
5. Breast Cancer Alliance
Breast Cancer Alliance’s foremost goal is to improve the quality of life of those battling breast cancer. It offers four main types of grants each year, namely Exceptional Project Research, Young Investigator Research, Breast Surgery Fellowships, and Education and Outreach grant. It also aims to widen access to cancer treatment.
