7 Human Foods That are Safe for Cats

Cat owners often find it difficult to resist the pleas of these doe-eyed creatures when they beg for food. Though certain human foods are indeed harmful to your cats, many others are absolutely safe. In fact, some even contain nutrients your feline friends need to stay healthy. So, it’s crucial to be familiar with various human foods that are safe and nutritious for your cat.

1. Meat
As a cat owner, you might already know that your feline friend is an obligate carnivore. That means cooked, lean meats like chicken, lamb, turkey, and liver are the healthiest and safest human foods for cats. However, make sure never to offer raw or spoiled meats to your cat. Also, remove all skins and bones before feeding them.

2. Oatmeal
This nutritious human food is safe and very healthy for cats. Oats are full of fiber, proteins, and iron. And felines need all these nutrients to live a healthier, happier life. Plus, it also helps relieve topical skin problems in cats. Not all cats like oats instantly, so introduce them to their diet slowly. You can also try feeding them other whole grains like brown rice, maize, and corn.

3. Fish
Cats love eating fish; it is packed with protein and omega-3 fatty acids. These healthy fats help maintain their vision and support joints, kidneys, and heart. Salmon, tuna, and herring are a few fish you must consider giving them regularly. However, raw and spoiled fish can make your furry friend sick. So, only give them cooked fish, and don’t forget to remove all the bones.

4. Eggs
Eggs are rich in protein and B vitamins and make an excellent addition to your cat’s diet. In fact, this ingredient is also found in many commercial cat foods. As with meat and fish, raw eggs are not good for cats, as it increases the risk of bacterial infection. So, cook them well before serving them to your cat.

5. Bananas
Like humans, cats find bananas delicious. And the great news for your cat is that this tasty treat is safe for them. Additionally, bananas are also high in potassium and soluble fiber, both healthy for felines. Since bananas are naturally high in sugar, they should not make up more than ten percent of their diet.

6. Cheese
Small amounts of cheese are safe for cats. Cheese is high in both calcium and protein. However, proteins found in cheese are not as nutritious as those found in meats, fish, and eggs. To reduce the risk of any tummy problems, feed them hard cheeses like cheddar, Swiss, or Gouda.

5. Vegetables
It’s true that cats don’t need veggies. But that doesn’t mean they are unhealthy or unsafe for them. Veggies are loaded with fiber, vitamins, and minerals, and many of them are absolutely safe. If your cat already enjoys feasting on vegetables, try giving them baked or steamed carrots, broccoli, asparagus, or squash. Some cats also love spinach, potatoes, cucumbers, and peas.
