Treatment Options for Deep Vein Thrombosis

Treatment Options for Deep Vein Thrombosis

Blood clots commonly appear when we injure an arm or leg. However, when a blood clot develops inside a deep vein, the condition is referred to as deep vein thrombosis (DVT). In this case, a piece of the clot can break away and travel up to the lungs. The risk of such complications makes it essential to receive proper treatment from a specialist.

Here are some available treatment options for DVT:

1. Medicines to prevent extra clotting
The doctor may prescribe some anticoagulants to prevent the blood from clotting up further. These essentially obstruct chemicals that make the blood accumulate in one spot. Anticoagulants will not make the clot disappear entirely, but they will prevent the condition from getting worse. Taking medications is a standard treatment option for DVT. Doctors may prescribe them along with other complementary treatment measures.

2. Compression stockings to apply external pressure
Compression stockings function by exerting pressure on the veins from the outside, which aids in blood circulation. As a result, the pressure within the veins is reduced, and the blood does not seep into the surrounding tissues. This approach has been found to lower the risk of the condition as well as the chance of developing post-thrombotic syndrome. Patients are usually told to wear support stockings until they show signs of improvement.

3. Mobility and leg raises for better blood flow
Mobility is required to boost circulation. Walking is known to improve circulation in the affected leg and may lower one’s risk of developing another clot. Leg raises may also prevent fluid from gathering in the calves as the foot is higher than the hip, due to which blood naturally flows back from the calf. It’s advisable to consult a doctor before trying out such exercises, as the affected leg may not always be fit enough for these workouts.

4. Thrombolytic therapy to dissolve clots
Thrombolytic therapy involves the use of medicines that are strong and aim at dissolving the blood clot. Eminase (anistreplase) is a clot buster that is commonly used in this kind of therapy. It may be given via an intravenous line. The medication will be targeted directly at the spot when the blood has clotted for successful results.

5. Embolectomy to remove a clot
A blood clot in the leg or pulmonary artery can be removed through embolectomy. It is an invasive procedure, and it isn’t a very common treatment option for DVT. While it is unclear if embolectomy can be considered a successful approach, the procedure may be used in emergencies. It aims to better the circulation in the affected area and prevent the possibility of damage to surrounding tissues and organs.
